Munich, July 4, 2004 –
Germans covered by the state health insurance scheme are very interested in
extra insurance in addition to the range of benefits of the public health funds.
Especially in demand are insurances covering areas where there have already been
cuts in the benefits of the public health funds or will likely be due to the
healthcare reform. These are the pivotal results of a survey by TNS Healthcare
among 14,000 Germans.
Roughly 55 per cent of adult Germans – more than 36 million people – are interested in separate insurance for dental prostheses. Coverage of spectacles or sight aids takes second place with 33 per cent prepared to take out insurance in this area. In contrast, "luxury benefits" like alternative forms of treatment, treatment by non-medical practitioners or senior consultants are not much sought after.
Members of the public health funds are willing to spend 29 euro per month on additional insurance on average. Consequently, a billion euro market is opening up in Germany for insurers who offer such coverage.
